About Master Data

When you are working with SAP system , you will hear the phrase 'master data ' frequently. What do we mean by it ?

Master Data is data that is stored in a database for a long time . OK ..wait a minite ! isn't all data stored for a long time ? . Answer is NO .. why is no ? take this example ..if you have created a purchase order in the system in 1990 and you received the material by that time and you paid the vendor , the transaction is closed . Why do you need to keep this data live in your system ? No need to waste your valuable storage resource for a data that does not give you a value. so kind of data called transactional data.

I can hear you saying : ok ..ok .. what if - for some reason - I wanted to go and check that PO again ?
the answer is that old PO will be archived not deleted , so if you have a need to check it , it can be pulled from the archive. but there is no need to keep it live in the system.

But with Master Data it is kept in the system for a long time. Examples of master data : material master data , vendor master data and some others.

we will see in the next post how to create a vendor master record.

see you then,,

The vendor send you the material and we posted it in the system using MIGO , as we saw in the previous post...
